Festival favorites Raúl Arévalo (Family United in 2014, Ghost Graduation in 2013) and Inma Cuesta (Three Many Weddings in 2014, The Sleeping Voice in 2012) star as Alberto and Luisa, a couple in their mid-30s with an adorable five-year-old son. Alberto and Luisa are living today’s Spanish headlines—he’s an unemployed writer and she’s desperately trying to make ends meet running classes while her dreams of designing are hopelessly back-burnered. At least they have each other—the crises visiting each of their siblings is another matter! Alberto’s brother Juan, separated from his own wife, is dating a woman 20 years his junior, and doggedly going through another early twenty-something party lifestyle just to keep up with her. Luisa’s sister Sara, played by Candela Peña (another Festival favorite!), is so obsessed with finding a life partner that she anxiously clings to any imagined romantic crumb dropped by her casual sex hook-up Paco.
As with all of us, Alberto, Luisa, Juan and Sara must fend off anxiety that their train is leaving the station without them. Their desperate dashes to keep up are a source of major laughter, all of it born from a readily identifiable place. – Jaie Laplante
